The UN Colonial Census Bureau’s system-wide compilation for 2155 — issued every five years, drawing together the most recent annual filings from every inhabited body. Supersedes the 2130 Mars-specific report for system-wide purposes; superseded in turn by the 2165 report. Total confirmed sustained human presence beyond Earth: approximately 1,219,000–1,225,000.

Earth-Luna System

Luna

Luna remains the largest single population center off-world, home to an estimated ~640,000 residents across the dome network and associated civil infrastructure. Guanghan — the first UN office established off Earth, now Luna’s capital — holds approximately 320,000. Kosmograd (formerly Zvezda) holds approximately 230,000, more than half Soviet citizens. The Luna Research Domes account for a further ~80,000. The remaining ~10,000 are scattered across outposts, mining stations, and orbital facilities. Guanghan Luna Port and Kosmodrom Zarya together handle more than a hundred launches per day.

Earth Orbital Infrastructure

ELTS I through VI — the six Earth-Luna Transit Stations — now handle all Earth-Luna passenger traffic. The Mir-Tian Space Station was formally decommissioned in 2149 as the expanded ELTS network absorbed its remaining function. Near-Earth orbital congestion from tracked debris has made new permanent station placement inadvisable without a dedicated remediation program.

Mars

Mars’s registered population has grown to an estimated ~304,000 across nine permanent settlements, up from ~121,000 across eight at the 2130 report. Isidis Rise (founded 2138 at Isidis Planitia) is the newest, established as a secondary fabrication and export hub to relieve capacity pressure on Meridian Forge. Independent operations — mining, ore processing, logistics — now number an estimated 2,100+ sites.

The Belt

Ceres~121,000 residents, the Belt’s primary administrative, medical, and civil hub. Growth accelerated following completion of the Orbital Port Expansion and Space Elevator (contracted to Celestia Structural Group in 2110, completed 2139).

Vesta~34,000, the Belt’s largest non-UN settlement, a company-town model built around mining and forge/manufacturing.

Pallas~28,000, similar company-town profile to Vesta.

Hygiea remains under UN seizure following the 2136 events and has not been reopened to civilian settlement.

Beyond the three major settlements: approximately 247 independent space stations — mining platforms, processing facilities, logistics depots, shipyard infrastructure — with combined staffing estimated at 8,000–14,000.

Jovian and Saturnian Settlements

Ganymede~43,000, the outer system’s principal food-production hub, supplying agricultural goods to Belt settlements and outer-system stations.

Titan supports two populations: Boreas Station (orbital, ~8,000) and surface habitation clusters supporting hydrocarbon extraction (~22,500).

Outer System Xenobiological Research Network

Each of the nine confirmed D-chiral worlds hosts a dedicated research facility, staffed at 10–30 personnel on rotation, for a combined population of ~190–240. None are settlements; all operate under research-access protocols.

Pluto

Persephone Reach — Pluto’s first genuine surface settlement, developed from the original early-2130s research habitats into a multi-habitat, largely underground settlement of 1,543 permanent residents. The UNS Canteloupe continues to serve as Pluto’s orbital station with an additional ~3,500 residents aboard. Dominium Hominis pilgrims have contributed directly to Persephone Reach’s construction, research support, and expansion — cooperation welcomed by UN officers and civilian settlers alike.

Venus

Aphrodite, the Hesperus Initiative’s cloud-layer habitat, has grown from 428 residents in 2142 to an estimated 2,500+. Hesperus’s gas economy has reached operational maturity: sulfuric acid metallurgy, sulfur-based plastics, thermochemical redox energy storage, oxygen/CO extraction (CO as propellant feedstock), solid carbon for structural composites, and nitrogen separation. Unmanned orbital antimatter production facilities target 10 kg/year capacity.
