Thirteen permanent settlements on Mars, housing ~1,330,000 residents as of the 2165 Colonial Census, up from ~304,000 across nine settlements at the 2155 census. The 2155–2165 growth is migration, not natural increase: net Martian arrivals totalled ~1.03 million — roughly 80 percent of system-wide growth over the decade — under charter settlements granted by the UN Office for Colonial Development.

Pobeda Station (est. 2066)

Mars’s oldest continuously inhabited settlement and de facto administrative capital. Founded at Korolev Crater, Vastitas Borealis, chosen for the permanent water-ice deposit confirmed by orbital radar. First crewed Kuzmin Drive landing on Mars (departed 2065, arrived 2066). Its defining architectural feature is the Silo: a spiraling excavated shaft descending 340 metres, with hydroponics near the surface, machine shops and reactor bays in the middle strata, residential rings at the bottom. Under the 2078 governance split, UNOLA holds civil authority while Moscow retains the Deimos shipyard, reactor programme, and Pathfinder Fleet. Home to Pobeda University and Martian Radio. Population: ~1,000 by 2075, ~3,800 by 2099, ~38,000 by 2130, ~74,000 by 2155, ~215,000 by 2165.

Meridian Forge (est. 2104)

Mars’s second-largest settlement, at Meridiani Planum. Originated from Emi Kato’s 2099 foundry proposal at Pobeda. Phase I reached initial operating capacity in 2104. A colony-scale foundry for structural metal and reactor-component manufacturing, built modular and expandable. Population: ~22,000 by 2130, ~48,000 by 2155, ~135,000 by 2165.

Chryse Basin Works (est. 2101)

Independent engineering and fabrication settlement at Chryse Planitia. Best known as the founding site of Novaya Zarya Propulsion Cooperative (2117), whose nested-shell Kuzmin refinement was developed here. Culture is distinctly independent-contractor and testbed-oriented. Population: ~14,000 by 2130, ~29,000 by 2155, ~105,000 by 2165.

Melas Station (est. 2102)

Reactor engineering and industrial R&D settlement at Melas Chasma in the Valles Marineris canyon system. The canyon’s depth provides passive radiation shielding for higher-risk industrial work. Population: ~9,000 by 2130, ~21,000 by 2155, ~65,000 by 2165.

Hellas Greenbelt (est. 2105)

Mars’s primary agricultural settlement, at Hellas Planitia. Sited at the lowest point on the Martian surface to exploit the planet’s highest atmospheric pressure, reducing greenhouse structural loads and pressurization costs. Supplies fresh produce to Pobeda, Meridian Forge, and other settlements, and absorbed the food demand of the 2155–2165 migration alongside the new northern agricultural districts. Population: ~12,000 by 2130, ~27,000 by 2155, ~120,000 by 2165.

Olympus Highport (est. 2110)

Mars’s primary spaceport, at the base of Olympus Mons. Sited to exploit the mountain’s extreme elevation for launch operations. Handled the majority of inbound traffic during the 2155–2165 Great Settlement; launch and descent capacity here and at Isidis Rise is the binding constraint on further arrivals. Population: ~10,000 by 2130, ~24,000 by 2155, ~125,000 by 2165.

Arcadia Icefields (est. 2112)

Ice mining and water processing settlement at Arcadia Planitia. Built over confirmed subsurface ice deposits; handles water processing and distribution for the northern Martian settlement cluster, absorbing the water demand of the 2155–2165 migration. Population: ~8,000 by 2130, ~19,000 by 2155, ~70,000 by 2165.

New Elysium (est. 2121)

Sited at Elysium Planitia in Mars’s most seismically active region to study and exploit geothermal power. Population: ~8,000 by 2130, ~20,000 by 2155, ~80,000 by 2165.

Isidis Rise (est. 2138)

Mars’s second-largest settlement by 2165, at Isidis Planitia. Established as a secondary fabrication and export hub to relieve capacity pressure on Meridian Forge as Belt-bound shipbuilding demand grew through the 2140s; launch and descent capacity here and at Olympus Highport constrains further arrivals. Population: ~22,000 by 2155, ~75,000 by 2165.

Utopia Basin Station (est. 2156)

Established under the first of the charter settlements granted in the 2150s by the UN Office for Colonial Development. Site of the largest single settlement in the northern lowlands. Handles the water demand of the 2155–2165 migration alongside Arcadia Icefields. Population: ~145,000 by 2165. The Utopia Deep Bore (UDB-1), spudded at the industrial perimeter in 2163 and completed at 2.1 kilometres in 2166, recovered the protocell populations reported in March 2167 — the first confirmed non-terrestrial proto-biosphere, protected in situ under Xenobiology Archive permit — making the station the largest human settlement in the system standing over it.

New Plymouth (est. 2157)

Charter settlement at Acidalia Planitia; the largest faith-charter settlement on Mars, established by a religious migration society. Population: ~90,000 by 2165.

Eos Station (est. 2160)

Charter settlement at Eos Chasma in the Valles Marineris canyon system. Absorbs fabrication demand from the 2155–2165 migration alongside Meridian Forge. Population: ~55,000 by 2165.

Sirenum Reach (est. 2162)

The newest of the charter settlements, sited in the Sirenum Terra highlands. Population: ~35,000 by 2165.
