Ganymede is the largest moon of Jupiter and the target of the first leg of the Pathfinder Fleet’s Jovian mission, as outlined by Fleet Commander Rosalind Kovács in November 2100. UN planning documents describe a planet-wide farm colony — the first attempt at large-scale, off-world agricultural production intended to feed populations beyond its own moon rather than merely sustain a local outpost. Survey teams aboard the fleet will finalize siting for the colony.
Pathfinder’s survey confirmed Ganymede as viable for the farm colony but found no biological material — a negative result that became scientifically significant after the Europa discovery (late 2103) established that the conditions for Jovian life were not simply “any ice moon will do,” but specifically required liquid water sealed for billions of years beneath a radiation-shielding ice shell. The Pioneer Fleet’s Shennong, carrying agricultural engineers and fabrication crews, was cleared to deploy and break ground on the colony in 2104.
