UNS Canteloupe is a Pioneer-class vessel built at Deimos over nineteen years (2111–2130). Unlike the single-ring habitat modules of earlier Pioneer-class vessels (Shennong and Boreas), Canteloupe is constructed as multiple nested Stanford tori — independently rotating ring habitats designed to house approximately 5,000 people. It remains Kuzmin-drive powered. Commanded by Dr. Lars O’Connor, a CAI selection. Its colonist complement (~85% Earth-origin, 10% Luna, 5% Mars) was drawn from a 2127 UN recruitment drive that drew over 580,000 applicants.
Following the 2131 Pluto discovery, Canteloupe’s mission was redefined from colonization to permanent research and security presence, becoming the UN’s orbital station in Pluto space. By 2140, it served as the gathering point for 89 Dominium Hominis pilgrims across 12 ships — an improvised role that Secretary-General Immanuel Hansen characterized as the first step toward permanent habitation and a planned public museum at Pluto (~2148). The 2165 Colonial Census recorded ~4,800 residents aboard.
