WANG XINYI: Commander O’Connor, thank you for speaking with us. Most of our readers know Ganymede’s harvest schedule better than they know the news — so let’s start with why Canteloupe is here at all, since Boreas Station would seem the more direct stop on the way out.

O’CONNOR: It’s not a direct stop, no, and that was deliberate on my part. I brought several modified crop strains with me — potatoes primarily, but a few others as well — that I developed myself. They need less fertilizer input and yield more than what Ganymede’s farmers are currently working with. I wanted to deliver them in person, not send them ahead as cargo with a data sheet attached. Seeds and strains like this do better when the person who bred them can answer questions on-site.

WANG XINYI: You say “developed myself” — most people know you now as Canteloupe’s commander, not as a botanist. Can you tell our readers how those two things fit together?

O’CONNOR: They don’t, really, which is most of the story. My doctorate is from Pobeda University — I worked on rice-like grain strains that could grow in modified Martian soil, and afterward on hardier crops meant for Mars’s harsher desert regions, outside any dome or controlled environment. I ran out of funding before that second project went anywhere. I’ve been passionate about Martian terraformation since before I had the degree to back it, and I’d still be doing that work today if the money hadn’t stopped.

WANG XINYI: And instead you’re commanding a Pioneer-class vessel toward Neptune.

O’CONNOR: Only because I bargained for it, and I want to be honest about that rather than let people assume I sought this out. When CAI selected me, I refused the commission outright at first. The only condition under which I agreed was that the UN would fund and continue my Martian terraformation research indefinitely, regardless of what happens with this mission. That was the only thing I asked for. It’s the only reason I said yes.

WANG XINYI: What do you make of the mission itself — Pluto, and whatever comes after Tsiolkovsky reports back?

O’CONNOR: Honestly, I have no clear idea what it’s for, beyond what’s been said publicly. Nobody’s told me anything more specific than the rest of the system has heard. My interest in this has never been Pluto. Once a settlement and a CAI installation are actually established there — if that’s what ends up happening — I intend to resign my commission and go back to Mars, back to the work I actually care about. I said yes to get funding for terraformation, not because I have any ambition to govern a colony a decade further out than anyone’s ever settled.

WANG XINYI: That’s a striking thing for a commander to say on the record.

O’CONNOR: It’s the true thing to say. I’d rather your readers know exactly why I’m out here than assume it’s something it isn’t. I’m a botanist. I came to Ganymede to hand a farmer a better potato. Everything else is the price I’m paying to keep doing that work when I get home.
