Physics

The Kuzmin Drive uses D-He3 aneutronic fusion, which produces charged particles (protons and alpha particles) rather than neutrons. This eliminates the neutron embrittlement problem of D-T fusion and allows direct conversion of fusion products to thrust via magnetic nozzle confinement.

The key breakthrough was Kuzmin’s plasma containment topology — a stable magnetic bottle geometry that maintained confinement at fusion-relevant temperatures for durations sufficient for sustained thrust. Kuzmin spent 11 years on the problem, and was known to say “a model of a plasma is not a plasma” — an insistence on physical experiment over simulation that delayed the programme but produced a containment solution that scaled.

Licensing

The Kuzmin Drive remained under exclusive Soviet control from 2062 until 2122, when the Luna Interplanetary Court ruled in Roscosmos v. Novaya Zarya Propulsion Cooperative (filed March 2119, decided August 2122) that Kuzmin-drive propulsion had become foundational interplanetary infrastructure. The court ordered Roscosmos to establish a standing licensing framework, open to qualified applicants system-wide, on fair and non-discriminatory terms, within eighteen months (by February 2124). Roscosmos did not appeal; the head of Roscosmos reportedly cited internal recognition that the corporation was “slowly becoming the old America” it had spent a century opposing. The Kaluga Protocol (2068) had already licensed Kuzmin propulsion to China specifically for the Ceres mission.
