Dr. Lars O’Connor is a Mars-born botanist and commander, selected by CAI to command UNS Canteloupe — the largest Pioneer-class vessel ever built, a multi-nested-Stanford-torus design housing approximately 5,000 people. Like Jakub Novák, his selection was a CAI appointment rather than a conventional UN process.

O’Connor holds a doctorate from Pobeda University, where he developed rice-like grain strains for modified Martian soil and hardier crops for Mars’s desert regions. He initially refused the CAI commission; his sole condition for acceptance was indefinite UN funding for his Martian terraformation research, regardless of the mission’s outcome. In a 2131 interview at Ganymede, he stated plainly that his interest “has never been Pluto” and that he intends to resign his commission and return to Mars once a settlement is established. Following the Pluto discovery in December 2131, Canteloupe’s mission was redefined from colonization to permanent research and security presence. He speaks English, Mandarin, and Russian fluently.
