“Iron Orbit” is Martian Radio’s late-cycle technical-culture program, broadcasting out of Pobeda since 2114 to an audience the hosts have described, more than once, as “people who read equipment manifests for fun.” The January 2120 episode — nominally a retrospective on twenty years of Mars-side small arms — ran long, and the second half is the more consequential one.

Hosts: Artyom “Artie” Kurov, Mars-born, self-described gun enthusiast and informal historian of Soviet-lineage hardware; and Elias Sinclair, Mars-born, a ship designer at the Deimos yards for twenty-six years before retiring last year.


The Transition-Year Arms

The episode opens with Kurov walking through what he calls “the most under-documented firefight in the Charter era” — the brief, largely unpublicized standoff at Pobeda during the 2101 administrative handover, when UNOLA’s dissolution under Article IV of the Charter put Soviet-loyalist security personnel and incoming UN security details in the same corridors for the first time, with authority lines that hadn’t finished being drawn. Nobody died. Weapons were drawn. Kurov’s interest is narrower than the politics: whose hardware actually worked.

“Standard UN kit at the time was AUG and AR-pattern, Earth-spec, more or less off the shelf,” Kurov said. “Loyalist security was still running modified AK platforms and Makarov sidearms — decades-old lineage, some of it literally the same actions that had been cycling since Kosmograd. And in a dust environment, at Martian-base temperature swings, the AK and the Makarov didn’t care. Loose tolerances, simple blowback and gas-piston actions, built to run dirty. The AUG and AR platforms are precision instruments. Precision instruments jam when regolith gets into places precision instruments don’t expect regolith to be.”

Sinclair, who called himself “the guy who designs the ship, not the gun,” added the structural read: “It’s the same story as everything else that decade. The hardware that had been quietly field-proven for fifty years in an environment nobody in FNAN was designing for beat the hardware that showed up new and untested. Deimos could’ve told anyone that. Nobody asked us about rifles, though.”

Kurov was careful to frame this as engineering, not nostalgia: “I’m not saying bring back the Makarov. I’m saying whoever specs kit for vacuum and dust needs to actually design for vacuum and dust, not adapt something that was designed for Earth and hope.”

The Pivot: Chimera

The back half of the episode turns to Argus Extraction Defense’s Chimera Platform — unveiled in a Council-cleared demonstration late last year, and, per Kurov, “the first genuinely new thing in this category since the Sentinel line.”

Chimera pairs a quadrupedal chassis — Kurov’s comparison, “somewhere between a pack animal and a gun turret that learned to walk” — with dual weapon systems developed in-house at Argus: the Halcyon-pattern round, a frangible, hull-safe projectile line explicitly engineered around the failure mode of the December 2100 Xingyu boarding, and the Apollo-pattern emitter, a directed-energy system built around the same reactor-output logic that lets Kuzmin-drive vessels sustain 1G cruise.

“People assume lasers are worse in a vacuum,” Kurov said. “It’s the opposite. No atmosphere means no thermal blooming, no scattering — you get full output at range in a way you never do on Earth. The tradeoff is power draw, not physics.”

Sinclair’s read was less about the weapon and more about doctrine: “The projectile round is for anything with mass and armor behind it — a hull, a hauler, something you don’t want to punch a hole in something you’re trying to protect. The emitter’s for a boarding in progress, where a miss with a round is a decompression event and a miss with a beam is just a miss. Having both on one chassis means you’re not choosing your failure mode in advance.”

Both hosts noted that Chimera runs under a narrow, target-recognition-scoped instance — Council-compliant, no independent authority beyond its tasked engagement envelope, the same domain-limited architecture the settled system has run since USTAV. “It’s a gun that can aim itself,” Kurov said. “It is not a soldier. Argus has been very deliberate about that distinction, and so far nobody’s given the Council a reason to doubt it.”

What Comes After Boarding

Sinclair closed the episode on a wider point, drawing on his years at Deimos rather than Kurov’s small-arms focus: “Every clash we’ve had since Halcyon Reach — every single one — is the same shape. Someone boards, someone’s caught or someone isn’t, it’s over in minutes. That’s not a navy. That’s cat and mouse with better guns each cycle.” He confirmed what he described as widely known inside the yards but not yet publicly announced: the UN is in early design work on armored, armed patrol vessels for Luna orbit — the first purpose-built warships, in any meaningful sense, since the Charter. “Chimera and things like it are what you build when boarding actions are the whole problem. Somebody at the UN has started planning for the version of this where they aren’t.”

Neither host speculated on where Argus builds its hardware beyond a passing reference from Kurov — “half their manufacturing footprint’s out on Vesta, which if you think about it is a strange place to headquarter a security contractor, unless the point is that nobody’s out there to watch you do it” — a line that drew no follow-up from Sinclair and was not returned to before the segment closed.
