In 2129, the UN Office for Colonial Development confirmed that Luna Research Dome 5 has reached full operational status at Von Kármán crater, within the South Pole–Aitken basin on the lunar far side — the fifth dome in the Luna Research network and the first built specifically as a dedicated propulsion and power research campus, independent of Dome 1.
The Dome Network

Dome 1’s engineering campus had, since its founding, absorbed early-stage propulsion and reactor-scaling work alongside its core energy-security mandate. Dome 5 represents a formal split rather than a new initiative: as propulsion research matured past the theoretical stage and began requiring dedicated reactor test stands, vacuum-chamber thrust testing, and containment-failure safety margins that a shared engineering campus could no longer accommodate safely alongside Dome 1’s grid infrastructure work, the decision was made to give it a dome of its own.
Von Kármán was selected for the same reasons Dome 1 sits on the far side — radio quiet, isolation from populated near-side traffic — and for sufficient physical separation from Dome 1 that a reactor test failure at one campus poses no risk to the other.
The Direct Fusion Drive Program
Dome 5’s primary program is the joint development of a Direct Fusion Drive — a field-reversed configuration (FRC) reactor concept, aneutronic D-He3 fueled like the Kuzmin Drive it is intended to eventually succeed, but using a fundamentally different plasma confinement geometry that generates thrust and onboard electrical power from the same reactor core. The program is staffed jointly by Soviet and Chinese propulsion researchers — the first formally joint Soviet-Chinese propulsion effort since the Kaluga Protocol licensed Kuzmin technology to China in 2068.
A UN Office for Colonial Development spokesperson: “The Kuzmin Drive is sixty-odd years old and no longer belongs to one country. It made sense that whatever comes after it shouldn’t either.”
Broader Mandate
Dome 5’s charter is not limited to the Direct Fusion Drive program. The announcement explicitly commits the facility to evaluating other propulsion concepts under active review, in pursuit of what officials described only as a hoped-for “breakthrough that could revolutionize space travel.” No further concepts were named. The UN spokesperson declined to characterize the remaining research: “We’re not going to announce something before it’s real. Ask again once there’s a test stand result to talk about.”
