On 3 November 2062, General Secretary Artyom Voskresensky addressed the Soviet Union on state television — broadcast simultaneously on Channel One and the Zvezda lunar relay — to announce the successful demonstration of the Kuzmin fusion reactor and the 2065 Mars directive. The address ran 34 minutes without interruption and is the founding document of the Era I propulsion canon.

The Reactor

Voskresensky traced the lineage from the Kurchatov Institute’s T-22 D-He3 confinement milestone of October 2035 — “twenty-seven years ago, at the Kurchatov Institute, a reactor held a fusion plasma stable for eight seconds. Eight seconds does not sound, to most of you, like the future. I am here tonight to tell you it was.”

Dr. Nikolai Kuzmin spent eleven years on “a single problem: not whether a fusion plasma could be confined, which the Institute had already shown, but whether it could be confined small enough, and steadily enough, to sit inside a ship.” He did this, Voskresensky noted, “without the computational shortcuts his own colleagues use daily. On 14 September 2062, a test article no larger than a delivery van produced sustained thrust from a deuterium-helium-3 fusion torch for 112 continuous hours. Specific impulse exceeded 20,000 seconds. The crewed vessel Pobeda (Победа, “Victory”) will be assembled at the Kaluga Yard in lunar orbit from the Zvezda base, departing for Mars no later than the spring transit window of 2065. Crew selection begins in spring 2063. Kuzmin will have his eighteen months before launch — just not before the announcement: “I have given him my word on this, and I am saying so on television because a promise made privately to one man is easier to break than a promise made to all of you.”

Kuzmin’s Absence

Kuzmin did not appear on the broadcast and made no public statement. The Kurchatov Institute press office released a one-paragraph statement four hours later: “The reactor test results described by the General Secretary are accurate. The Institute has no further comment on the schedule.”
