Dr. Nikolai “Kolya” Kuzmin is the Soviet physicist who solved sustained deuterium-helium-3 fusion confinement for spacecraft propulsion — the Kuzmin Drive, dated 2061 ES in the author’s canonical record. He spent eleven years on a single problem: not whether a fusion plasma could be confined (the Kurchatov Institute had demonstrated that in October 2035, sustaining D-He3 for 8.3 seconds), but whether it could be confined small enough, and steadily enough, to sit inside a ship.

His methodology was characterized by General Secretary Voskresensky as deliberately pre-computational: Kuzmin trusted physical bench tests over simulations, reportedly stating “that a model of a plasma is not a plasma, and that he would trust a bench that had failed nine hundred times over a simulation that had succeeded once. He was, on this point, correct, and it is worth remembering — for those who forget it — that being correct is not the same as being comfortable to work with.”

On 14 September 2062, a test article no larger than a delivery van produced sustained D-He3 fusion thrust for 112 continuous hours. Specific impulse exceeded 20,000 seconds — translating to a Mars transit time of weeks rather than months.

Kuzmin asked for another eighteen months of bench testing before any public date was fixed.
