The UN Office for Colonial Development, jointly with Luna Research Dome 4’s Xenobiological Life Division, this week announced the public launch of the Xenobiology Archive — a free, open-access database of every catalogued non-terrestrial organism recorded since Dr. Yoon Tae-jin’s 2103 confirmation of life at Europa, hosted at xenobiology-archive.un and built, per Dome 4’s own description, “in the spirit of what the sequence and structure databases did for terrestrial biology a century and a half ago — a shared reference, not a private one.”
What’s In It
The Archive currently holds records for 134,859 formally identified species, drawn from nine confirmed non-terrestrial biospheres: Callisto, the six Saturnian D-chiral worlds first catalogued between 2108 and 2118, and the two Uranus/Neptune-system moons added to the record in 2133. A further more than 600,000 specimens have been scanned, sequenced, and archived but remain formally unidentified — the bulk of that backlog concentrated in the more recently surveyed Uranus/Neptune material, where field time has been a fraction of what Callisto and Enceladus and other Saturnian moons have received since the early 2100s.
Readers familiar with the shared-ancestry finding may notice an absence: Europa is not included among the nine. This is deliberate, not an oversight. Skotophagus europae and every other organism catalogued from the Europan ice-ocean interface shares standard terrestrial chirality at every level examined — DNA structure, amino acid handedness, sugar chirality — and is filed instead in the Archive’s terrestrial-lineage companion database, alongside Earth’s own biological record. The Xenobiology Archive proper is reserved specifically for the mirror-chirality biospheres first identified at Callisto the year after Europa, and everything catalogued there since.
Why Now
Dome 4 confirmed that recruitment is opening for its Xenobiological Life Division concurrent with the Archive’s launch, timed to the UN Office for Colonial Development’s newly announced plans for dedicated research stations at several of the nine catalogued sites — a shift, officials said, from rotating survey missions toward permanent local presence, mirroring the pattern already underway at Boreas Station and elsewhere in the outer system. No construction timeline has been finalized for individual stations.
Closing a Forty-Year Arc
The Archive’s launch closes something more personal for the researcher most associated with the project’s scientific foundation. Dr. Ibn-Rushd, whose 2118 comparative genomic study first established common ancestry across seven of what are now nine catalogued worlds, and whose 2133 follow-up extended that finding to the Uranus/Neptune system, has spent effectively his entire career on this question — beginning, by his own account, as a junior researcher on Dr. Yoon Tae-jin’s original Europa team in 2103.
“I was the person carrying equipment on that mission, more or less,” Ibn-Rushd told this desk. “Tae-jin found the first life beyond Earth. I got to watch that happen from close enough to understand what it meant, and I’ve spent forty-one years since trying to understand what it meant that the very next thing we found didn’t match it at all.”
Yoon died in the mid-2120s, a decade before either the 2133 Uranus/Neptune paper or this Archive; Ibn-Rushd has led the Pathfinder Fleet Xenobiology Division in the years since. Asked what he thought his mentor would have made of the Archive, Ibn-Rushd paused before answering. “He used to say he’d found one organism at the bottom of one ocean and gotten far too much credit for it, when the interesting work was always going to be everything found after. I don’t know that he expected ‘everything found after’ to still be going in 2144, honestly. I’d like to think this is the version of it he’d have wanted — not mine, not his, just available. He was never precious about whose name was on a thing. I’ve tried to hold to that, and this Archive is the largest way I’ve been able to.”
Ibn-Rushd would not speculate, on the record, about whether the shared ancestry underlying the nine D-chiral worlds bears any relation to the Charon Anchor findings published separately by Dr. Liang Qiuyue earlier this year — a connection this desk asked about directly. “That is a genuinely different question, with genuinely different evidence behind it, and I’d be doing exactly what I’ve spent my career telling other people not to do if I speculated publicly past what either dataset actually supports,” he said. “Ask me again if someone finds a reason to connect them. Nobody has yet.”
