Yoon Tae-jin (윤태진) is a professor of xenobiology and the head of the Pathfinder Fleet Xenobiology Division. He is the corresponding author of the Skotophagus europae discovery paper (2103), published in the Journal of Astrobiological and Cosmochemical Sciences (JACS) — the first confirmed instance of extraterrestrial life and the first evidence of a shared biochemical lineage between terrestrial and Europan organisms.
Yoon’s team recovered S. europae from the ice-ocean boundary layer of Europa, 22 kilometers beneath the surface ice shell, using drilling equipment aboard the Pathfinder Fleet frigate Korolev. The organism’s DNA structure, amino acid chirality, and sugar chirality were identical to terrestrial life at every level examined — establishing panspermia as the working scientific consensus, though Yoon’s paper was careful to stop short of asserting a specific transfer mechanism.
The paper’s most significant open question, which Yoon flagged without resolving, was taxonomic: S. europae is genomically Archaea but behaviorally eukaryotic (phagotrophic predation), a domain-crossing combination with no terrestrial analog. Yoon proposed the new phylum Cryoarchaeota as a provisional classification.
