One month after the Luna Interplanetary Court issued its ruling in Roscosmos v. Novaya Zarya, Tianshui Wire Network’s Chén Yìfēi sat down with Pytor Danko — one of Novaya Zarya’s three founding engineers, now working ship-maintenance contracts out of Ceres Port — for the network’s first extended interview since the verdict. Conducted in Mandarin; Danko has worked in Chinese-speaking crews since relocating to Ceres in 2120 and answered without an interpreter.

The Case in Summary

Danko described the core dispute succinctly: Roscosmos sued Novaya Zarya for alleged theft of Kuzmin Drive technology. The cooperative’s actual work — re-analyzing sixty years of publicly released flight data from commercial Kuzmin engines, data required to be public for insurance and port authorities — produced a new nested-shell confinement geometry approximately 18% more efficient than the baseline. The court found no infringement: the design used public data and did not match Roscosmos’s specific 2062 patent claims.

The Essential-Facilities Ruling

On the broader significance, Danko emphasized the court’s finding that the Kuzmin Drive had become “infrastructure the whole solar system runs on” rather than one company’s product. The court’s eighteen-month deadline for Roscosmos to establish a fair, non-discriminatory licensing framework meant that any qualified applicant — Danko named Kuiper Heavy Industries, Apex Orbital Extraction, Jiuzhou, and Chuangxin as likely candidates — could apply for a manufacturing license by February 2124.

The Cost

The interview’s most difficult passage addressed the personal cost. The injunction held for three years with no revenue and only legal costs; by March 2121 Novaya Zarya could not continue and dissolved — seventeen months before the ruling that vindicated its work. “We won the case. The company had already stopped existing,” Danko said.

The nested-shell containment patent was auctioned in bankruptcy proceedings to a Roscosmos-affiliated holding entity. Roscosmos’s first post-monopoly engine line, announced in 2123, incorporated that same nested-shell confinement design. Danko, asked about this: “We proved it works. We just didn’t get to build it ourselves. I said that once in an interview and it seems to have been quoted everywhere since.”

On whether he regretted the effort: “The licensing framework opens next year. There won’t be another Novaya Zarya that has to spend three years proving something that was already true. That part, I think, was worth it. As for me — I’m still fixing engines. Just other people’s, now.”
