Apex Orbital Extraction is a Martian-origin mining firm and one of seven companies approved to operate on Ceres as of January 2100, having cleared CAI/Oracle review under Governor Liu Wenjing’s administration. Like the other six approved firms, it operates off-world manufacturing capacity for electronics and finished components rather than shipping raw extracted material back to Earth.
In 2131, twelve miners across three Apex Orbital extraction sites filed the first augmentation-discrimination suit to reach a UN labor tribunal, alleging that promotion into higher-hazard, higher-pay roles had become functionally contingent on cybernetic augmentation. Apex Orbital’s defense: augmented workers are disproportionately represented because of performance outcomes, not policy. The case was complicated by the emergence of the Biohackers, whose gene therapies matched cybernetic performance without mechanical components — exposing a regulatory void in which neither augmentation method was meaningfully governed by existing law.
The suit is recited in the founding resolution of the 2159 Tianshui Compact: twenty-eight years on, the resolution states, hiring at the belt’s company towns remains governed by company practice rather than any binding framework. Former Apex heavy-rig mechanic Jason Bennett was elected co-chair of the resulting Sovereign Miners’ Coalition.
