The numbers released alongside the launch answer some of the questions this desk has carried since 2110. They do not answer all of them.
The Numbers
Treasury’s release puts current antimatter production at 968 grams per year — against a floor estimate, current at the time of the Bond’s original planning, of roughly 3 kilograms annually. Of the five orbital production facilities originally proposed for the Venus program, only two are currently operational. Both run unmanned and automated; Hesperus maintenance crews visit on a weekly-to-monthly rotation from the Venusian cloud-layer habitat, rather than staffing the facilities directly.
That habitat — called Aphrodite — is home to 428 people. Hesperus’s own 2100 recruitment figures put total signed headcount above 40,000, the overwhelming majority of whom, by the company’s own account at the time, had never left Earth. Forty-two years later, the population actually living and working at Venus amounts to roughly one recruit in a hundred.
Treasury’s statement characterized the Bond’s launch as “conservative but real,” and confirmed the instrument will sit above UNC as originally planned, backed by verified antimatter reserves rather than a production target. It did not characterize the shortfall between planning-stage estimates and current output, beyond noting that “orbital antimatter collection has proven a harder engineering problem, at scale, than early projections assumed.”

I’m not saying that happened. I have no evidence it happened. I’m saying a thirty-two-year delay and a two-thirds production shortfall is consistent with both the boring explanation and the less boring one, and Treasury’s statement today gave me an output figure, not an explanation for the gap between that figure and what we were told to expect. I asked this question in 2110 because the honest answer was “we don’t know yet.” The honest answer today is still “we don’t know yet.” We just have a number now.
