On 22 November 2141, a vessel identifying itself as UNS Vanguard engaged and destroyed seven ships operating out of the Belt under mining registry markings, later confirmed by UNSF to be a coordinated piracy operation rather than legitimate haulers. Several additional vessels believed connected to the same operation fled the engagement; UNSF reports these were subsequently hailed, surrendered voluntarily to boarding, and had recovered stolen cargo removed and catalogued. No casualties among UNSF personnel were reported. Casualties, if any, among the destroyed vessels’ crews have not been disclosed.
What makes the encounter the story, rather than the piracy itself, is Vanguard. No battleship-class vessel has appeared in any public UN fleet registry, construction manifest, or budget disclosure prior to this week. As of the morning of the twenty-second, there was no public record that the UN Security Forces operated, or was building, anything in this class at all.
The Toll
UN Command has not yet released a formal damage assessment for the piracy campaign Vanguard’s engagement is believed to have ended, but preliminary belt-wide estimates place total losses at approximately 1.2 billion UN Credits, accumulated across a pattern of raids UNSF now attributes to the same network: processed and manufactured goods pulled from transport runs, stolen He-3 stockpile, hijacked ice hauls, and at least several confirmed vessel hijackings outright.
A representative of the Ceres Merchants’ Council, reached for comment, did not hide the Council’s frustration that the scale of the losses only became public alongside the news of a warship nobody had been told existed.

Quietly, mostly, because nobody wanted to spook shipping insurance rates further than piracy already had. No Official Record
UNSF’s public affairs office confirmed Vanguard’s existence only after image and sensor-log fragments of the engagement began circulating through Belt shipping networks in the hours following. Luna Command issued a brief statement the following day.

Twelve Ships, Not One
UN Command disclosed that Vanguard is not a singular vessel but the lead ship of a battleship-class construction program at Luna — eleven additional hulls currently under construction, twelve in total. Command described the hull and armor technology as drawing directly on recent Dome 1 research, with propulsion supplied by Dome 5’s Direct Fusion Drive program — the aneutronic D-He3 field-reversed configuration reactor concept Dome 5 has developed since its 2129 founding, generating both thrust and onboard electrical power from a single core. Command characterized the drive fitted to the battleship class as a substantially improved lineage descendant of the original Kuzmin Drive rather than a wholesale replacement of it.
Smaller escort tonnage — frigate and corvette classes intended to operate alongside the battleships — has been outsourced to the Deimos shipyard, whose capacity has stood underused relative to its potential for decades.
