Crawford’s 2130 fundraising announcement, Martian Radio’s “Red Static” brought on Julian Cobb — a retired ship designer with three decades at Deimos shipyard, credited on hull work going back to the early Pathfinder-class fleet — to assess what’s actually known about The Ark’s technical picture.

Groundbreaking, originally targeted for 2131, has not been formally announced. Belt shipyard circles indicate candidate sites narrowed to two or three, but nothing staked or registry-filed. Cobb: “For a project this size, five years of ‘still finalizing the schematic’ isn’t unusual. It’s also not nothing.”
The Leaked Technical Circular

Configuration: Stationary central spindle — drive, main reactor, fuel tankage, and command all mounted non-rotating — with two counter-rotating ring habitats nested concentrically around it, coupled to the spindle and to each other by magnetic bearing tethers rather than mechanical ones. Each ring maintains spin via small tangential thrusters.
Cobb on the stationary spindle: putting the drive train on a despun hub solves the rotating seal problem that twin-cylinder concepts never eliminate — fuel lines, coolant loops, and power conduits don’t need to cross a rotating interface. Thrust goes straight down the axis with no precession. Counter-rotating rings net angular momentum to zero.
Cobb on the magnetic bearings: “What they’re being asked to do here is also carry the entire ship’s forward thrust through that same interface, while it’s spinning, for a century, with nobody able to walk out and put a hand on it if the field starts to sag. That joint is now the single most important piece of hardware on the entire ship.”
Katya noted nested rings hold less land than the twin-cylinder concept historically associated with O’Neill designs — “up to a million” at full capacity likely doesn’t survive the actual floor plan.
Shielding: Outer layer of processed water and ice, approximately nine meters thick, wrapped around both rings — doubles as the ship’s working water reserve. Cobb: “That’s a real number, not a hand-wave. Nine meters of water gets you meaningful galactic cosmic ray attenuation.”
Propulsion: Multiple licensed Kuzmin-class D-He3 engines, mounted on the stationary central spindle. Sustained burn at departure, extended coast phase, sustained deceleration at arrival. Estimated transit time on the order of a century. Cobb’s reaction was positive: instead of reaching for an exotic unproven drive, they’re using hardware flying commercial Belt routes since the 2124 licensing framework opened. “A hundred-year flight is not where you want to be debugging a drive nobody’s ever flown.”
Power and interior light: Independent onboard fusion reactors, separate from the propulsion engines, generating continuous baseline power and artificial illumination cycles. Mirror-reflected sunlight only works near a star — for the century-long coast, “daylight” is fusion output run through a lighting rig. Cobb identified this as the hardest unsolved problem: two separate fusion programs (propulsion + interior power) both running flawlessly for a century with no resupply and no rescue.
Systems governance: Shipboard systems intelligence, independent of Oracle. Cobb: “Something has to run life support, farming cycles, reactor load balancing, and probably crew administration for a century with no outside authority to appeal to if it starts making bad calls, and by design nobody’s checking its work.”
The Core Objection
Cobb’s closing argument: with that scale and resource commitment, why point it at Alpha Centauri at all? Build it as an in-system station — an administrative and population center with real gravity, real weather, real scale. An immediate, working use of the exact same engineering.
Katya’s rebuttal: a habitable planet was never the point. Distance was. Crawford said it plainly in 2130 — the design brief was getting somewhere UN and CAI rules don’t reach. A station in stable in-system orbit is still reachable, still auditable, still one enforcement action from being brought back under UN charter. A cylinder burning for Alpha Centauri isn’t. “Whether or not there’s a rock to stand on at the far end might genuinely not be the point. The point might just be that nobody can follow them there.”
Cobb’s final assessment: skeptical of the timeline and the silence around shielding budgets, but not skeptical that someone will eventually try. “I just think the honest version of this project admits it might be a one-way trip into permanent uncertainty dressed up as a destination, and so far nobody running it has said that part out loud.”
