Crawford, Martian-born lead fundraiser for The Ark — a crowdfunded O’Neill cylinder generational ship publicly announced this month, drawing support from Gulf-based private capital, a coalition of billionaire donors, and several pro-embodiment advocacy groups organized in opposition to the Article Four Coalition. Crawford declined to name specific funders.
The Ship
The Ark is an O’Neill cylinder designed as a generational colonization vessel — “not a courier, not a military vessel, a home.” Planned capacity: 100,000 minimum, up to one million at full interior allocation. Target: Alpha Centauri. Construction sites being evaluated in the Belt, with groundbreaking and site preparation potentially beginning as early as 2131. Crawford estimated the frame and systems could plausibly be finished by the turn of the next century, acknowledging he may not live to see it launched.
Independence
The defining feature of The Ark is its political architecture: it is designed to operate entirely outside UN and Oracle jurisdiction. No UN charter, no CAI oversight on ship governance, no embodiment restrictions under the Charter on Embodied Cognitive Systems. Crawford: “At some point ‘the UN keeps everyone safe’ and ‘the UN has become too powerful to say no to’ stop being different sentences. We’re not interested in relitigating that fight in-system. We’re leaving it.”
The pro-embodiment framing explicitly positions The Ark in opposition to the Article Four Coalition’s alignment with UN oversight. Crawford articulated the ship’s stance on embodied cognition plainly: “If someone wants to create a cognitive capable humanoid robot themselves in ways the Charter on Embodied Cognitive Systems doesn’t currently permit in UN space, that’s not our business to forbid on The Ark. That’s the whole point of building somewhere the rule doesn’t reach.”
The Name
Crawford on the biblical reference: “A ship built before the flood, carrying everything worth saving, going somewhere the old rules can’t follow. I won’t pretend that’s subtle. It isn’t meant to be.”
