Luna Research Dome 4 — the UN’s dedicated medicine and life-sciences facility, operational since 2109 — has spent the better part of two years declining to comment on the biochemical research recovered from the 2105 Dominium Hominis raid. This week, its lead researcher agreed to talk about it directly for the first time.
Dr. Klaus Jäger has led Dome 4’s hematology and radiobiology division since 2117, and is lead author on the division’s first major publication: a full biochemical characterization of what Dominium Hominis members called, without technical vocabulary, “black blood” — and what Jäger’s paper terms a melanized hemoprotein analogue, successfully replicated and trialed in mice and, more recently, chimpanzee subjects.
Starting With the Uncomfortable Part
Jäger opened the interview, unprompted, on the question he said Dome 4 has been asked most and answered least. “I want to say plainly what this research is built on, because pretending otherwise helps no one,” he said. “In 2105, UNSF personnel recovered biochemical notes, tissue samples, and self-experimentation records from the Artemis base raid. Those records represent unregulated, non-consensual, and in several documented cases fatal human experimentation carried out by Dominium Hominis on its own members, including children. We did not generate that data. We inherited it, seized as evidence, and it sat in UNSF custody for four years before Dome 4 was given clearance to study it.”
Asked whether that origin disqualifies the science from legitimate use, Jäger did not deflect. “I’ve had that argument with people whose judgment I respect, and I don’t think there’s a clean answer. What I can tell you is what we did with it: every subject who suffered to produce that original data is beyond any benefit we could offer them. The choice in front of us wasn’t between an ethical origin and an unethical one. It was between letting what happened to them produce nothing, or extracting something that might protect people who choose this work freely — miners, transit crews, colonists — going forward. We chose the second option. I understand why some people think that’s the wrong choice. I don’t think it was an easy one.”
What the Blood Actually Does
Chemically, the analogue’s dark coloration comes from a melanin-derived pigment structure integrated directly into the modified hemoprotein — not a cosmetic effect, Jäger stressed, but the mechanism itself. “Melanin absorbs and dissipates ionizing radiation as chemical energy rather than letting it cause direct cellular damage — it’s the same basic principle observed in radiotrophic organisms found in high-radiation terrestrial environments going back to the earliest Chernobyl exclusion zone studies. Dominium Hominis’s engineers, whatever else is true about them, found a way to build that mechanism directly into a functional oxygen-transport protein. That is a genuinely significant piece of work. It is also monstrous how they proved it functioned.”
Trials in mice showed measurably reduced radiation-induced cellular damage under controlled exposure, alongside oxygen transport efficiency modestly exceeding baseline hemoglobin. Chimpanzee trials, completed earlier this year, replicated both findings with no adverse hematological response over the observation period. Human trials are scheduled to begin in 2124, pending final review — voluntary, informed, and, Jäger noted pointedly, “compensated, documented, and reversible in a way none of the original data ever was.”
Bone Density: The Limit They Can’t Yet Cross
The interview turned notably more guarded on the second line of recovered research — the skeletal density modifications observed in Dominium Hominis’s surviving children in 2105. Here, Jäger said, Dome 4 has hit a hard technical ceiling. “What the cult achieved was gestational. Embryonic gene modification, before birth, restructuring how the skeleton develops from the earliest stages. We cannot replicate that in an adult subject, not with anything we currently understand, and I want to be direct that we are not pursuing embryonic application of this data under any circumstance — that crosses lines Dome 4 will not cross, full stop.”
What the division has produced instead is pharmacological, not structural: a treatment that measurably slows the rate of bone density loss in low-gravity and microgravity environments, tested successfully alongside — not in place of — existing approaches like the Ceres gravity-loop program. “It’s not what the original data promised,” Jäger said. “It’s a real result. It buys time, the same way Bondarenko’s Svarog compounds bought time for radiation exposure two generations ago. I’d rather be honest about a modest result than oversell a dramatic one we can’t deliver.”
Asked what he’d say to critics who see Dome 4’s entire program as a UN body profiting from an atrocity, Jäger paused before answering. “I’d say they’re not wrong to ask the question. I’d say I ask it myself most days I walk into that lab. And I’d say the answer I’ve settled on is that refusing to learn anything from what happened wouldn’t have undone it — it would just have meant nobody got anything back for it at all.”
