In 2105, UN Weekly reported that Vysota Station — the rotating orbital habitat in Mars orbit, operating since 2081 — would begin a phased expansion from its current 50-person capacity to roughly a thousand, adding cargo and docking infrastructure that would, for the first time, position it as a functioning trading port rather than a habitation-only facility.
The Station
Vysota was never built to compete with the private orbital hotels operating under Omani flag — extensions of Suhail Station’s private-capital lineage. It was conceived as plain, functional, and medical in purpose: a spinning habitat generating genuine standard gravity through rotation, built to give crew and officials who spent extended periods in Mars’s partial gravity (0.38 g) somewhere closer to full gravitational loading than Pobeda’s own environment provided, without the multi-month round trip to Earth.
That utilitarian framing did not stop the station from becoming, in practice, the preferred destination for UN, Soviet, and Chinese officials with business in the Mars system. “The only place out here that actually feels like standing on solid ground,” per more than one visiting official’s on-record comment. Less opulent than an Omani hotel, considerably harder to get a berth at.
Power
Vysota has run on a thorium reactor since construction — a deliberate choice. Solar collection at Mars’s orbital distance was judged insufficiently reliable for a rotating habitat’s continuous power draw. He-3-based power was considered a poor use of a resource increasingly earmarked for higher-value applications, even before UNC’s formal 2101 backing. Thorium offered a terrestrial, well-understood fuel source requiring no dependence on belt or Jovian supply chains, at the cost of a heavier reactor housing — a trade-off station engineers considered acceptable for a facility that was never going anywhere.
The Expansion
The expansion would roughly twenty-fold the station’s housing capacity. Administration officials described it as a response to genuine demand pressure: gravity-therapy and recreational bookings had run at or near capacity for several years, and Mars orbital traffic had grown enough since the Charter reforms that a proper trading waypoint no longer needed to be justified purely on projected future demand. Construction was expected to proceed in phases, with the original 50-person core remaining in continuous operation throughout.
