Vysota Station is a rotating orbital habitat in Mars orbit, operational since 2081. Built as a utilitarian medical facility — a spinning station generating genuine standard gravity through rotation — it was designed to give crew and officials spending extended periods in Mars’s partial gravity (0.38 g) access to full gravitational loading without the multi-month round trip to Earth.

Despite its deliberately unglamorous framing, Vysota became the preferred destination for UN, Soviet, and Chinese officials with business in the Mars system — “the only place out here that actually feels like standing on solid ground.” Unlike the Omani orbital hotels (extensions of Suhail Station’s private-capital model), Vysota was UN-administered, functional rather than luxurious, and considerably harder to get a berth at.

The station has run on a thorium reactor since construction — solar collection at Mars distance was judged insufficient for a rotating habitat’s continuous power draw, and He-3 was considered too valuable for routine station power. The thorium choice required no dependence on belt or Jovian supply chains.

In 2105, a phased expansion was announced: capacity from ~50 to ~1,000, plus cargo and docking infrastructure, positioning Vysota as a trading waypoint for Mars-orbit traffic in addition to its medical and recreational roles. The original 50-person core would remain operational throughout construction.
