In 2100, UN Weekly’s Technology & Industry Desk sat down with Torvald Meling, co-founder of Hesperus Initiative, following the deployment of the company’s first unmanned habitation module into the Venusian cloud layer — the first tangible proof of a terraforming program that had been recruiting for twenty-two years without a single piece of operational hardware to show for it.
The Venus Pitch
Hesperus Initiative was founded in 2078 by Meling and Dr. Livia Conti with a terraforming target no serious atmospheric engineer had treated as a practical candidate for most of the 21st century: Venus. Meling’s argument, refined over two decades into something close to a company script: Venus has near-Earth gravity, a hospitable pressure-and-temperature band roughly 50–60 kilometers up, and a solar flux at that altitude unmatched by any other body in the inner system. “Mars, you’re fighting for every watt. Venus, at altitude, you have more sunlight than you know what to do with. The problem was never energy.”
The framing — solve it in the clouds, not on the ground — is what the company recruited around. Hesperus ran recruitment drives on every settled body for twenty-two years, promising not a mining contract or a shipping berth but a stake in what Meling’s early materials called “the first world humans will finish, instead of just survive.” Company figures put current recruited headcount above 40,000 — the overwhelming majority of whom have never left Earth.
The habitation module deployed in 2100 is a first proof rather than a finished habitat: unmanned, small relative to the company’s eventual “cloud city” architecture, but functioning — atmospheric processing intake running, structural integrity holding at altitude, solar collection online. “This is us finally being able to point at something,” Meling said. “Twenty-two years of ‘trust the pitch’ and now there’s a module up there actually breathing Venusian air and doing something with it.”
The Antimatter Question
UN Weekly raised the question that had followed Hesperus for years in belt trade and shipbuilding circles: whether the company’s solar collection infrastructure is intended for something beyond terraforming power — specifically, antimatter production aimed at propulsion.
Meling’s response was weary but direct: “We are trying to make a planet survivable. That is the entire company.” He confirmed early discussions with UN Treasury around a possible reserve-asset instrument — since named the Antimatter Bond, expected toward the mid-2110s — but characterized it as a secondary use for byproduct material. “If the collection array we need for atmospheric processing happens to also be useful for something a Treasury desk wants to build a financial instrument on, fine. That’s not why we built it. We are not a weapons company. We are not a propulsion company.”
Pressed on why the rumor persisted, Meling offered a more candid assessment: belt operators watch transit costs and wonder what breaks the Kuzmin Drive monopoly, and antimatter is the obvious theoretical answer. “If someone actually solved that, the belt stops being expensive to reach, and every rare-earth market on Earth that’s priced on scarcity assumptions gets a very bad week. That’s a real conversation. It’s just not a conversation about us.”
Hesperus Initiative has not applied for any UN mining or extraction permit at Ceres or elsewhere, and Meling confirmed the company has no plans to do so.
