Neuromorphic Foundries is a Leuven, Belgium-based company co-founded in 2058 by Sofie Van der Meulen and Bram Coenraets, both imec alumni. The company builds offline, single-instance, locally-hosted neural core hardware — a direct challenge to the cognition-cluster rental model that has dominated commercial deployment since the late 2040s.

The company’s direction was shaped by two external developments: the Volkonsky et al. (2055) sparse connectomic scaffold paper, which demonstrated that comparable cognitive performance could be achieved at substantially reduced substrate scale, and Kosmograd’s USTAV system (operational since at least the late 2050s), which proved that a genuinely efficient cognitive system could run an entire settlement’s infrastructure on hardware dramatically smaller than commercial cluster deployments.

The company’s current-generation core (as of 2063) occupies roughly the volume of a small guest room with power draw between a commercial laundromat and a small manufacturing line — well beyond residential service but within reach of universities, hospitals, municipal governments, and sufficiently dedicated private citizens. The architecture and a baseline trained instance were released under open license in early 2062, producing a community of modifiers, curriculum-sharers, and independent hardware builders within four months. Van der Meulen has declined to legally contest derivative instances published by third parties.

The company operates independently of state defense funding. Van der Meulen’s stated motivation is structural: “Efficiency research that threatens the rental model was never going to come from inside the companies built on the rental model.” The company represents the first commercially viable attempt to break the cognition-cluster monopoly.
