November 2168. The Ark Project has published ARK-TS-2168-04, “Modular Hull Configuration: Technical Specification,” on its public site. It is the first official technical disclosure since the 2147 leak of construction images from Pallas. Iron Orbit hosts Wesley Dvořák and Irina Järv brought on Dr. Harrison Vargas, the retired UN propulsion researcher whose 2147 analysis of those images the new document appears to confirm, and played a recorded statement from Dr. Nathaniel Argus, released the same week. The specification names as its author Dr. Pietro Galli, an engineer with no prior public record. A search of the name turns up one trace: a series of filings at the UN Patent Office, Luna, covering elements of the Ark’s hull configuration.


Wes: Welcome back. Twenty-one years ago, someone handed Tianshui Wire a set of photographs and Dr. Vargas here did algebra on a hull. Today the Ark finally got around to publishing its own paperwork. Erin, set it up.

Erin: ARK-TS-2168-04, Revision A, dated September, posted to the project’s public site with no announcement and no press contact. Title: “Modular Hull Configuration: Technical Specification.” It is a short document, and it is the first document the Ark has ever released that was not pried out of them by a leak or a subpoena.

Wes: Twenty-one years of “no comment,” and then, one afternoon, a specification.

Erin: Our guest knows this document better than anyone who did not write it. Dr. Harrison Vargas, joining us from Ceres.

Wes: So. The numbers. In 2147, you read the leaked images for TWN. You said: a cylinder with a rod through the middle, 0.05 g sustained burn, 0.04c cruise, 283 days to cruise, a 2.86 degree floor tilt, about 110 years total. Now the official document.

Vargas: The official document says: 0.05 g sustained burn. 0.04c cruise. Approximately 283 days. A floor tilt of 2.86 degrees from the as-built floor plane. One hundred and ten years to Alpha Centauri, arrival window 2310. I have never been confirmed this precisely by anyone, including my own employers.

Erin: The resultant gravity figure too. You told TWN 1.0012 g.

Vargas: The specification says 1.0012 g. I did that arithmetic off a photograph in an office on Ceres in an afternoon. They put it in the permanent record. I am choosing to take it as a compliment and not a correction.

Wes: The other thing in the document: the vocabulary. “The Aft-Tilt Era.” “The Century Coast.” You coined those in the TWN piece. They are now in the Ark’s official specification, capitalized, one of them as a section header. You named the phases of their voyage from a news analysis.

Vargas: I called it “expected shipboard vocabulary.” I did not expect the shipbuilders to adopt it before the crew did. I confess I am pleased. Aft-Tilt Era is a good name. It will outlast me, which is a strange thing to say about two words, but it is true.

Erin: Section six of the spec is titled “The Aft-Tilt Era.” It states the tilt is accepted, uncompensated, no structural change. “Option A,” they call it. One operational adjustment: drainage in the agricultural shells. That is the entire human cost of the first 283 days. Rain falls slightly diagonal, and the drains are scheduled around it.

Wes: What else is new since 2147? You said “a cylinder with a rod through the middle.” The spec says bottles.

Vargas: Modular habitat cylinders. Three at launch, minimum, strung along the rod with connector sections between them. My “cylinder” was the photographs; the bottles are the plan. It is a better plan. One module can be sealed off without condemning the ship, and the ship can grow after arrival. The document is careful to say the attachment hard points are “a design affordance” and that no post-arrival construction program is defined. That sentence has personality. It says: we are not promising you a second ship, we are leaving ourselves the option.

Erin: Now the part you flagged in 2147 as the single point of failure. The bearing.

Vargas: The coupling between the spinning habitat and the stationary structure, carrying the full thrust of eight drive units. That was my phrase: the one place they can’t afford to be wrong. The specification answers it: superconducting maglev decoupling collars at each end cap, rotation decoupled without mechanical contact, thrust transmitted magnetically, the load distributed across the collar rather than concentrated in a bearing patch. That is the correct sentence. It is also the entire public answer. They have told us the problem is solved, and the method by which it is solved, and nothing about the numbers behind the method. As an engineer I have no complaint. As a journalist, which I am happy to rent for the hour, I would like the numbers.

Wes: What about the other problem you flagged? The shield.

Vargas: That one is less fun. In 2147 I said the forward shielding was not visible in the images and had to exist before departure. The specification does not describe it. It says, quote, “propulsion and forward shielding are specified separately.” A shield is the one component where a photograph could not lie and a document could. They have published everything about the hull and nothing about the shield, and I would rather it were the other way around.

Erin: And the population. Everyone wants the number.

Vargas: The document says life support is sized to “the design capacity per module as established in the module specification set.” Which is a way of saying: the number exists, it is written down somewhere, and it is not in this document. The 2130s figure was a million. The 2140s figure was a hundred thousand. Both were political numbers, and this document refuses to be in that business. As an engineer, I respect it. As a member of the public, I would like to know whether my great-grandchildren’s ship carries a city or a town.

Wes: The Ark’s founder has weighed in, in his usual manner. A recorded statement, in Russian, released through his office. Erin, the translation.

Erin: Statement from Dr. Nathaniel Argus, dated yesterday: “We are told, from time to time, that the Ark is a rumor. A hull in a jurisdiction that does not exist, funded by a man who spent half a century declining to appear in the record. The specification published this month is the answer. It is not a press release and it is not an invitation. It is a statement of what has been built and how it works, issued because the record should be made of documents rather than of leaks. Dr. Vargas’s 2147 analysis was correct in every particular that mattered. It was correct because the photographs were genuine and because he is a serious engineer. The specification omits nothing that a competent engineer requires. It omits a great deal that the curious would prefer to know. The distinction is deliberate.”

Wes: “The distinction is deliberate.” For a man who does not do interviews, he writes a closing line.

Vargas: He called me a serious engineer. I have been called worse things by better people. [pause] The line that matters is not about me. It is “the record should be made of documents rather than of leaks.” He is telling us the next decades will be more documents and fewer photographs, and that we should get used to reading.

Erin: About that. We did get used to reading. The specification names its author: Dr. Pietro Galli, with unnamed colleagues. Dr. Galli has no prior public record. No publications we can find, no interviews, no registry entries. One exception. The UN Patent Office at Luna holds a series of filings under his name, in his own name, not the project’s. Three of them. The earliest, filed 22 March 2164, granted 14 June 2166, Patent No. UNPO-L/2166/0317: “Superconducting magnetic decoupling collar for rotating habitation modules.” The filings list his address as Pallas. The second, published and pending: “Modular hard-point interface for series-connected rotating habitats.” The third, filed in July of this year, a few weeks before the specification went public: “Drainage configuration for rotating agricultural shells under sustained axial thrust.”

Wes: Wait. The Ark files patents?

Erin: Not the Ark. Dr. Galli. The ship is built in a jurisdiction the UN doesn’t reach, and its named author has been filing paperwork with a UN office for years.

Vargas: That changes the bearing answer. In 2147 I called the coupling the single point of failure. The specification tells us the problem is solved, and the method, and nothing about the numbers. A patent is a different kind of document. To be granted, it must disclose how the thing works. The numbers I said I wanted this hour: if the collar filing is what it says it is, they are sitting in a public office on Luna. Argus wants the record made of documents rather than of leaks. His named author has been filing documents with the UN for four years. I assume there is a fascinating conversation happening at Pallas this week, and I would pay to hear it.

Wes: So which is it? A contradiction, or a strategy?

Vargas: Neither. A patent is not permission. It is a claim, registered with whichever office will recognize it. The Ark declines UN authority, and it also would prefer that no shipyard copies its hull the week after publication. Both positions fit in the same head. What I cannot tell you is whether Dr. Galli filed with the project’s blessing or on his own account. The specification does not say, and neither does anyone at Pallas.

Erin: One thing about the timing. Whoever chose to name Dr. Galli in the document knew what a name search would find.

Wes: Or approved it without looking.

Erin: With this project, both are plausible.

Wes: Nineteen years ago on this program, Luciana Beaumont told us who Nathaniel Argus is, and asked what the Ark is for. The specification answers the question of what the ship is. The other question is still open. Some silences are louder than the document.

Erin: Dr. Vargas, thirty-two years from departure. Will you still be doing this when they light the drives?

Vargas: If I am, I will be very old. If I am not, I will be annoyed. Either way, the numbers will hold. They are not mine anymore. They are the ship’s.
