Dr. Gisa Argus — German neurosurgeon, Luna University-trained, and wife of Dr. Nathaniel Argus. Published a theoretical framework for embodying a general cognitive system in an organic brain rather than an artificial one — human-capable synthetic bodies with a human brain inside — using the term “androids” years before anyone else made it stick. Her proof of concept successfully relocated a drosophila brain into a synthetic housing; the unsolved problem was keeping organic tissue alive outside its native body. Her work is a genuinely open question under Article Four, which governs artificial cognitive systems — an organic transplanted brain falls outside its language. Both she and Nathaniel wrote separately about cybernetic enhancement and cognitive humanoid embodiment as the next step of human evolution.
The couple had twins — a son and a daughter — and moved to Michigan in the late 2080s. The son died in a car accident in 2096; Gisa took her own life in 2097, unable to move past a guilt Nathaniel reportedly told her wasn’t hers to carry. In a 2149 Iron Orbit biography, investigative historian Luciana Beaumont speculated that the Ark is primarily about finishing Gisa’s work outside UN jurisdiction, rather than about Alpha Centauri.
