Titan is the largest moon of Saturn and the target of the third leg of the Pathfinder Fleet’s mission, as outlined by Fleet Commander Rosalind Kovács in November 2100. The mission order calls for hydrocarbon feedstock manufacturing — refining Titan’s surface and atmospheric hydrocarbons into plastics and pharmaceutical feedstocks currently supplied almost entirely by Earth-crude extraction. Kovács characterized this as the most underestimated piece of the mission: “If Titan works the way the survey data says it should, that dependency ends within a generation.”

In 2104, UN Colony Administrator Kirana Saraswati confirmed that the second Pioneer-class vessel, Boreas under Commander Mateus Costa, would convert in orbit into a permanent docking and processing station at Titan — the ship becomes the infrastructure — supporting surface fabrication and habitat units for hydrocarbon manufacturing, with an unmanned automated transport shuttling ice from Enceladus. The 2165 Colonial Census recorded ~48,000 on the Titan surface, supporting hydrocarbon extraction and, since the early 2160s, greenhouse agriculture in the lowland basins. The November 2195 census recorded 88,000 on the surface, within a Saturnian system total of 180,000.

The index case of mirror-fold encephalopathy — the first human disease from templating across the L/D-chirality barrier — was a Titan surface hydroponics technician who presented at Boreas Station in March 2176; the colloquial name “mirror prion” entered the Saturnian press from the station’s first suspected cluster, and the Titan surface health authority assisted the paper’s dispensary reconstruction. The paper also tracked a possible second exposure route through the mirror biocatalysis enzymes free-licensed alongside the 2130 class — untracked as medicines and used in hydroponic, food-processing, and chemical-synthesis work — noting that eleven of its nineteen cases without a therapeutic-exposure record worked in those occupations. In December 2179 the authority suspended new prescriptions of the 2130-class D-chiral therapeutics pending a lot review — a step the paper’s authors neither recommended nor opposed — and ordered no recall of existing stock.

In September 2191, the General Assembly adopted the Mirror-Fold Treatment and Exposure Register Resolution, adding diagnosis and treatment to UN Basic Health Care Insurance for UN citizens and creating a system-wide register of the 2130 class’s recipients. Yusra Demir, the Titan greenhouse worker quoted by BBN in 2179, was diagnosed in March 2191, treated in July and discharged in August, at 76.
