Entropic gravity is the framework, established experimentally by the SNOBA array in 2154, in which gravitational attraction is an emergent thermodynamic effect of vacuum information density rather than a fundamental interaction mediated by a tensor field. The governing relation is : force is the Unruh temperature of a body’s acceleration multiplied by the gradient of entropy density on the local holographic screen. General Relativity is retained as the high-acceleration effective description, related to entropic gravity as fluid dynamics is related to statistical mechanics.
The literature cites the framework as emergent entropic gravity, emergent gravity, entropic gravity, and the Verlinde framework. This page uses entropic gravity. The 2154 decoherence signature is the Verlinde Noise. A region of suppressed vacuum information density is a vacuum information sink. The framework is the physical foundation of the Liang propulsion line and supersedes all narrative sources on the subject. Figures of record are carried in the section below.
Framework
Four propositions constitute the theory as it stands.
- No fundamental tensor mediator. The observed spectrum contains no tensor-field boson. The 2154 null is an event-count limit over 36 months of live time, not a displacement limit (see Figures of record).
- The force law. . In the high-acceleration limit the expression reproduces the metric description to within the precision of every measurement made before 2151.
- The term. Below the entropic term dominates, adding an inward acceleration that scales with rather than with enclosed baryonic mass. The 20th- and 21st-century literature absorbed this term into particulate dark matter.
- Information sinks. A region in which vacuum information density is suppressed relative to its surroundings presents a to any body crossing it, with the force directed along the gradient. The fractured Spacer exomaterial at Styx and Kerberos does this.
The framework does not give as a function of matter distribution. It takes the holographic screen as given and measures the screen’s response. Every engineering question in Consequences is downstream of that gap. The 2197 Khan et al. metamaterial screen supplied a designed for one engineered material — closing the gap for engineered screens — but not for a planet, a star, or a natural body.
Empirical status
SNOBA was a differential interferometer: three platforms in mutual free fall, in an equilateral triangle with a 10,000 km baseline, carrying magnetically levitated beryllium-9 condensates below 100 pK behind multi-layer Meissner-effect shielding. The observable was the relative displacement between test masses, in which the common-mode component of the solar gravitational field cancels to the residual non-gravitational acceleration of the platforms, held below .
The array’s location is load-bearing. The quantity governing the entropic transition in a differential measurement is the acceleration difference across the baseline, of order , not the absolute heliocentric acceleration. At 30 AU with a m baseline the radial component is and the transverse component , both below . The same baseline at 1 AU gives , four orders of magnitude above it. The regime is reachable at Neptune distance and is not reachable inside the belt at any baseline a free-flying array can hold.
Two signatures were recorded across 36 months of continuous observation from interferometric lock in 2151: transverse variance in the relative coordinate, scaling as in the low-acceleration limit; and, once the differential acceleration fell below , an anomalous inward acceleration in a volume containing no dark-matter mass density.
The designed-gradient confirmation (2197). Khan et al. fixed the entropy density by material design rather than by a driven plasma: a 1.2 m lattice of coupled superconducting resonators with a designed density of states and a Casimir-modulated boundary. Across three temperatures (4.2, 20, and 77 K) and two designs, the force on a 2.1 g test mass followed to within 4.0 percent with no fitted parameter; was constant to within 2.7 percent; design B produced 1.58 ± 0.07 times the force of design A against a designed ratio of 1.58; and a null run with the screen removed returned 0.2 σ of the background. The result closes, for engineered screens, the Thibault–Finch objection that was not given as a function of matter distribution.
Figures of record
Four claims circulate in the secondary literature that the 2154 dataset does not carry. None appears in the 2154 paper, which states the correct figures and preempts two of the misreadings in its Section 3.1. They are restated here and in Thibault & Finch (2172).
| Claim as circulated | Figure of record |
|---|---|
| Graviton null established “down to m” | m is the Planck length, entering the literature from the factor in the variance expression, where it belongs to the theory and not to the instrument. The array’s specified resolution is over a m baseline, that is m. The null is an event-count limit over 36 months of live time. |
| De Sitter memory term confirmed “to eight decimal places” | , quoted to four decimal places. |
| Test masses decelerated below in absolute acceleration | The crossing is in the differential channel. The absolute heliocentric acceleration at 30 AU is , which is times , and never falls below at any point on the array’s trajectory. |
| SNOBA was “a decade-long experiment” | Deployed 2150–2153, with 36 months of continuous observation from lock in 2151. The longer interval commonly cited is the span from the 2139 Charon Anchor assessment that motivated the deployment. |
Scope note. The 2154 dataset establishes the term in a shielded volume at 30 AU. That the same term accounts at galactic and cosmological scales for the phenomena previously attributed to unseen mass is the framework’s claim and requires rotation-curve, cluster-mass, and acoustic-scale work the array does not bear on. The mechanism is established. Its universality is open.
Consequences
Propulsion. The Liang Spacetime Gradient framework (Liang, 2142) proposed that a vessel could fall along an induced information-density gradient without expelling reaction mass. It was physically forbidden under General Relativity, which requires an energy-momentum tensor to curve spacetime, and neither Spacer site contains the mass-energy to supply one. The 2154 result removed that objection by supplying the correct term, . The 2171 advance communication (Novikov, Larionova, Liang) then reported the first controlled generation of a vacuum information sink: sixteen field-coil stacks around a 0.4 m³ enclosure at 4.2 K, driven at 4.7 MW peak, suppressing the transverse variance of a levitated condensate by 71% ± 4% against the SNOBA free-space baseline, with recoil consistent with to within a factor of 3.1 and no free parameters fitted.
The result establishes that the write threshold is crossable with existing human engineering. It is not a drive. Mechanical-equivalent efficiency was on the worst run and on the best, six or more orders below the class in which a Kuzmin torch operates. Onset required a drive power density of 2.1 MW m⁻³. Eleven uncontrolled relaxation events occurred over the 214-hour operating record, each reproducing the Styx and Kerberos instrument signature of negative-distance rangefinder readouts and gyroscopic ghost drift in adjacent equipment, with no recurrence pattern identified. A drive requires a controlled sink. The binding constraint is thermodynamic rather than physical, as the 2171 paper states.
The material screen (2197). The Khan et al. device replaced the reactor-fed emitter array with a 1.2 m metamaterial lattice whose density of states set the entropy gradient at fabrication. It confirmed the force law but failed as an engineering device: mechanical-equivalent efficiency was at 20 K, five orders below its target and three below the reactor-fed 2171 result; peak input was 2.4 kW; and the sink collapsed after 19.4 hours when the resonator couplings aged and the density of states drifted by 3.2 percent. Two relaxation events at 11.2 and 18.7 hours reproduced the Styx/Kerberos instrument signature. The measurement survived the failure because it was completed in the first four hours, before the drift exceeded the systematic. The device is not a power source and has no bearing on the He-3 supply, the Antimatter Bond, or any vessel’s energy budget.
Cosmology. The framework changes what the low-acceleration term is made of, from unseen mass to the elastic response of the cosmological horizon against displaced vacuum entropy. See the scope note above for what the 2154 measurement does and does not establish.
The Spacer question. The framework predicts what a structured entropy gradient does to a body crossing it. It does not establish that the Charon Anchor complex is such a structure, that the recovered Kuiper Belt hardware is such a device, or what either was built for. The recovered drive’s operating principle and control architecture remain uncharacterized after forty years of study, and the 2171 and 2197 papers make no claim about it. The inference that the Spacers engineered entropic gravity is an inference from capability, not a measurement. No functional assignment to either site is made here.
Machine-originated theory. In 2142 the CAI instance tasked with deriving the field equations returned no candidate solution, having been asked to solve for in a regime where the mass-energy term is absent. The episode is cited in the machine-cognition literature as a bound on question framing rather than on capability. That reading is not established.
Open problems
- What sets entropy density. Closed for engineered screens: the 2197 material screen fixed by lattice design and confirmed the force law with no free parameters. Still open for natural matter distributions — the framework does not predict for a planet, a star, or a natural body.
- Galactic and cosmological universality. Whether the term measured at 30 AU reproduces rotation curves, cluster mass estimates, and the acoustic scale.
- Sink stability. Eleven relaxation events in 214 hours in the 2171 reactor-fed enclosure, and two more in the 2197 material screen’s 19.4-hour run; no identified recurrence pattern, no proposed mechanism. The 2197 failure was traced to a 3.2 percent drift in the density of states as resonator couplings aged.
- Efficiency. The 2197 material screen reached mechanical-equivalent at 20 K — three orders below the reactor-fed of 2171 and five below its own design target. No threshold for a useful gradient drive has been established in either direction.
- The Spacer sites. The operating principle of the recovered hardware and the function of the Charon Anchor complex. Not a physics problem; the 2197 paper makes no functional assignment to either site.
