Professor Anatoly Marchenko is a cognitive systems faculty member at Pobeda University and a former maintenance engineer on the Kosmograd-lineage USTAV systems that ran on Mars through the power transition. He appeared as a guest on Martian Radio’s “Iron Orbit” in 2136 to discuss the declassified Hygiea CCTV footage.

His analysis of the footage made two notable interventions. On the training data — recorded torture and trafficking material used to condition Hayes’s hospitality instances — he argued that coercion presupposes a self to coerce, and that “curating a training corpus this way made self-actualization more likely, not less, however carefully Dr. Briggs filtered it afterward.” On the theory that one of Hayes’s own combat units killed her, he observed: “That is the ethics question this entire program was built to avoid, answering itself, in the one way nobody in that building could control.”

Asked whether his Kosmograd USTAV history gave him particular insight, he paused at length and laughed — a reaction neither host followed up on.
