Amara Diallo-Sørensen is the Secretary-General of the United Nations. On 19 May 2045, she presided over the General Assembly vote admitting the State of Palestine as a full member state (187–4, 2 abstentions) — the resolution of what she called “the oldest item on this body’s standing agenda,” first debated by the Security Council in 1947. She declined to characterize the vote as a UN achievement, stating plainly that “this was decided in Ramat Gan and in Ramallah, by people who live with the consequences the rest of us only debate.”
Her tenure oversaw the codification of the informal veto-restraint convention documented by Prof. Kwame Adeyemi (2050): by 2048, all five permanent Security Council members had publicly committed to non-use of the veto on “humanitarian floor” issues, a category that by 2049 formally included food access, water access, and protection from displacement, following the 2047 General Assembly resolution establishing the Humanitarian Floor Doctrine.
