The Autonomous Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) is a Montreal-based AI research institute founded by Yann LeCun in late 2029, after his departure from Meta. Its founding thesis — that Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA) models, which learn by predicting representations in an abstract latent space rather than generating outputs directly, offered a more promising path to machine understanding than generative pretraining — was a niche position at its founding.
After the OpenAI bankruptcy (March 2031), AMII’s profile shifted sharply. Its research staff expanded from three to fourteen, with seven hires from bankrupt or contracting frontier labs. Anthropic added JEPA-derived world-model architectures as an active research track, and venture interest followed the post-bankruptcy diaspora toward approaches that prioritized efficiency and graceful degradation over scale.
LeCun characterized AMII’s position in April 2031 not as vindication but as part of a broader reckoning: “JEPA isn’t the answer. It’s one of several places people forgot to look.”
