Li Xuan is a geologist assigned to Guanghan Base’s third crew rotation who, on 29 September 2039, gave birth to a daughter, Li Chen — the first human born beyond Earth. She departed Earth on 14 February 2039 approximately one week pregnant, the pregnancy undetected by standard pre-flight medical screening.
The decision to continue her pregnancy to term at Guanghan rather than attempt an emergency return was made by Base Commander Guo Wei, who cited the risk profile of transit during an unstable early gestational window. Guanghan’s regolith-covered construction provided shielding roughly equivalent to Earth-surface background radiation — a factor base medical staff described as decisive.
She returned to Earth with her daughter nine days after birth. Her public statement, released through Guanghan’s public affairs office, asked for privacy for her family.
